On April 12, 2018, the creators of St. Sucia zine visited our Latinas in Society class to talk about their journey into zine making here in San Antonio, Tx. I was especially excited as I have known Natasha Hernandez and Isabel Ann Castro since before they started this project. Natasha is a registered nurse, poet and vinyl DJ and Isabel is a freelance artist who studied graphic design. I have supportively kept up with their adventures over the years and while I’m so proud of seeing Latina women like me doing things their own way, I was so inspired all over again, and so happy that Professor Casso invited these incredible women to show our class what’s up. Natasha and Isabel were upfront with the class about the issues they faced as women trying to express themselves and do things their own way. They were rejected by print shops because of the content the zines contained, which explores everything about being a minority, a woman, queer or person of color, from sex, to politics through writing and artwork. Both Natasha and Isabel openly spoke about their abortions and the depression or anxiety that can build up from not expressing one’s self. Here is another wonderful platform for women to heal through writing and perhaps inspire another who may be going through similar things. I’m glad the class got to see these women and hopefully they can take something from this presentation. I myself plan to submit writing to St. Sucia in the near future.
