We have finished QRMSS in class, and moved onto Visual Research Methods by Gregory C. Stanczak. In the introduction, he touches on the three main themes of this book which are: epistemology, methodology and substantive or theoretical contributions (Stanczak, 2007, p.4-12).

He begins the book by giving us examples or demonstrating how one can use visual imagery to illustrate data. He questions,”how do images convey and to whom?”. Through visual photography, we are able to stir up conversation. Perhaps we can give visibility to something through shock value. Visual studies have always been around and contribute heavily to social sciences. As sociologists, we have the burden to report what’s going on in society.

Through visual imagery, we hope to spark conversation through data. We are able to rethink what the data tells us, pursue meanings, and ask questions. We can look at themes and come to figure how it is that we come to know what we know (epistemology).

Something important to consider is being transparent and allowing your audience into the process. This can impact our credibility and validity as researchers. We need to discuss the process of why we did what we did, especially when it comes to manipulating original image (ex: cropping or lighting). Why did the photo maker manipulate and change conveyed meaning?

This medium of story-telling allows us to illustrate stories we’ve been telling, through pictures. Within this process, perhaps, contributing substantially and theoretically. Sometimes through our research, we can empower and enable change, bringing social stories to a wider audience.
